The course, taken by mosaic artist Anne Cardwell, is structured and is designed for beginners and those with some knowledge wanting to explore new techniques and advance their knowledge of mosaic. Anne will take you through everything you need to know about mosaic making, from her own lively design style, to a wide a range of techniques, materials and ideas for projects. Students will participate in making a wide variety of projects with much more detailed information than can be imparted on a one day course. The first three weeks you will create some delightful small size mosaics together as a group, then you will be ready to undertake your own larger size mosaic. There will be access to a wide range of very fine quality and luxurious materials, ranging from marble to beautiful iridescents, stained glass, vitreous tiles, matt ceramic tiles, millefiori beads and many others not normally offered to students. This is an important point as many mosaic studios will only offer basic materials on the courses.

Typical course content will include;

WEEK ONE Cutting and laying tiles, making a 150 x 150mm coaster. That your tiles need cut is obvious, exactly how to do so is not quite as clear! The course will cover the use of different tools and demonstrates the cutting of stained glass and tougher materials such as marble. There is an extensive range of mosaic materials from luxurious ‘smalti’ enamelled glass to matt ceramic tiles to look at and try. In the first week we will also cut up some prepared clay into some small ceramic shapes for use later in the course, so you can make some totally unique tiles to include in your work.

WEEK TWO Direct and indirect mosaic making techniques, using mesh, making a slab/glass on glass coasters, glazing bisqued ceramic shapes from week one.

WEEK THREE 3D project, balls and pots, inc pique assiette (china).

Cost includes samples for each discipline at every stage. Below are listed the projects.

Students will make at a minimum, Matt ceramic coaster (£6), 1 x mosaic slab (£10), 1 glass coasters (£5), 1 mosaic balls (£5) (can be hung and used as a (xmas) decoration), 1 flower pot or container £5, 1 A6 sheet ceramic to create pieces to glaze £10, and one final project approx A4 size (£10). Total £51.00 (included). Extra work charged as completed.

Final project WEEK 4, 5 and 6, Now there is a chance to fully explore your own creative potential! Students make a mosaic in a chosen technique (making an A4 mosaic takes about 7 - 9 hours). Some larger projects may also carry a supplement, as this part of the course allows for £10 of materials only.

If you choose to complete work at home and start additional projects there will be an extra charge for materials, based on £10-£15 per A4 mosaic (depending on materials).Some special tiles not included in the course are available to buy. As an alternative to creating a mosaic picture, consider covering a pot, birdball/house, a small item of furniture* etc.., there are endless possibilities for the practical application of this wonderful art.  (*not supplied).

Classes take place on Wednesday or Thursday mornings over 3 hours. Classes run from 9.30am - 12.30pm, from the studio in Newport, Essex.  Maximum 8 students.

Deposit of £70.00 required at time of booking. TERMS Deposit is non refundable but may, as a good will gesture if cancellation is unavoidable, be used against any future courses advertised on this site - subject to ‘last minute availability’, ie you take your place in the list behind those who are booking for the first time.
