Cambridge University Botanic Garden school visits
Making flagstones with three local schools during school visits, Cambridge University Botanic Garden.
The first of three schools came on January 17th, the second on the 24th, the third on the 31st.. the last will come in March. Drawings were submitted in advance, three were selected from each school and enlarged to fit the size of the flagstones which will be cast and laid in the education garden. The mosaics are made onto sticky back plastic, later the finished mosaic will be lowered sticky side up into a mould, into which concrete is poured to make slabs, so in effect the mosaics are being made in reverse.
Work is swift, with no glue to apply and many of the pieces cut in advance the boards are rapidly covered. I’m kept busy constantly nipping difficult shapes, but by 1.30pm, after three 45 minute workshops, the mosaics are finished, every one of the thirty or so children will have helped create the mosaics. The schools will come back and see the finished mosaics in situ in the education garden in a few weeks time.
The mosaics look fantastic! Everyone is very excited to know the work they did will be seen by visitors for many years to come. Well done everyone.
