Mosaic art courses in Newport, Essex
Anne Cardwell has been offering courses in the ancient and fascinating craft of mosaic since 2005 - it is a lot of fun, it's creative, addictive and easy (if you know how!). If you would like to learn about this fascinating art join one of the popular courses in Newport, near Saffron Walden, a beautiful part of rural Essex....
The artist
Anne has been designing for over twenty years, working in London design consultancies after graduating from Kingston University in 1986, before turning her illustrative hand to the medium of mosaic a decade or so ago. She is author of 'Stylish Mosaics', a newly published 'how to' mosaic book by Hamlyns (2010), which is crammed full of contemporary mosaic designs for modern interiors (see Amazon). She has a passion for design and for mosaic and ceramics in particular, which she loves to share with others - you will soon be infected with her enthusiasm for the art!
Tuesday morning weekly (term time) courses click here

Six week courses
Six week courses can be an ideal opportunity to explore your full creative potential in mosaic! Where else would you get the opportunity to hand made your own ceramic pieces and include them in your work?
A six week structured mosaic course starts every half term. The students learn in a relaxed and friendly environment how to create a picture using glass, hand made ceramic or found china pieces. This involves intricate cutting techniques and learning how to create a flow (andamento) with the tiles. Students receive a thorough briefing on practical matters, bases to use, adhesives (very important so your mosaic does not fall to pieces) and an outline of the most frequently used techniques. An extremely comprehensive 12 guide page to mosaic making will be emailed.
The students have the opportunity to make a wide range of mosaic projects and also some hand made ceramic pieces to inset into their mosaic work (an important feature of Anne’s own work). There is an introduction to the many fabulous materials used in the creation of mosaics - paving slabs using marble, light-catchers working glass on glass, and covered objects in 3D; all and more are covered in this fast moving intensive course. Students also receive detailed notes and will graduate from the class with a really comprehensive knowledge of a variety of mosaic techniques - further details here. The student’s progress is also documented every week on our facebook page. - have a look and see what they have made.
Please note places on these courses tend to book a long way in advance.

Testimonials

”wonderful, I don’t consider myself especially creative
and I can’t believe what I succeeded in making - great value for money - thank you” Catherine, Cambridge
Lunch was totally divine and oh yes the mosaic making was too!
Beverley, Luton.
Anne and Gill are passionate about their craft and it shows. Their own work is very original and the range of mosaic tiles they provide, sourced from all over the world, is inspiring too. I loved their selection of 1950ʼs junk shop saucers, which under their skilled guidance (and a hammer!) soon became a treasured garden ornament. Thank you girls! Helen R. SW

‘”tonnes of choice of materials and lots of help and ideas from Anne and Gill made it a most enjoyable experience” Martin, Bury

from 17th September 2010

Dear Anne and Gill, I really enjoyed the course on Friday and Saturday...it was inspiring, fun and most importantly fed my creative soul!! Thank-you for your advice on projects with children, our year 5 study the Romans so I can see it would fit neatly there. Take care and thanks again for a really enjoyable two days.

Regards Helen H, from HULL

My great news is that I finally finished my mosaic (picture above). I am very pleased with it but it's far too precious to be an IKEA table top, as was the original plan!

'The perfect creative experience, with excellent teaching support, delicious lunch and fun company. I arrived knowing nothing and went away with a beautiful mosaic and a brand new interest. Many thanks Anne.'

LYNDA, March 2011

The studio was really inspirational with all the lovely mosaics on show,

Range of materials really good - like an Aladdin's cave, it was hard to be restrained and stick to the colour palette I'd chosen.  Friendly, helpful - and patient - teaching and the course notes sent afterwards were very comprehensive. I can't wait to get my own tools and materials now and get started at home.

Simon, ELY

A brilliant day and a great introduction to mosaicing. I've got lots of projects in mind and I've told my husband (who bought me the course as a present) that he'd better not stand still or I might mosaic him! I enjoyed it so much I'm going to book another day with my friend  and my daughter wants to come along too.

SUE, Cambridge

A group of four friends came together and spent a day at a private workshop, each finished an A4 mosaic in one day (below).
